Our story

A breakfast room built from the ground up.

An ingredient-led morning room on Shattuck Avenue — our own kitchen, our own rhythm, our own legacy in North Berkeley.

The dining room at golden hour

Shattuck & Butter is a new breakfast and brunch room on a stretch of Shattuck Avenue that has fed North Berkeley for decades. We're opening with deep respect for the block — and a clear ambition to build something that's entirely ours.

Our cooking is generous, ingredient-forward, and unpretentious. Soft scrambles on toasted levain. Chilaquiles with a real salsa verde. A brown-butter French toast we've been chasing for years. The kind of plates you want again next weekend.

Longer hours, a real evening.

We're open from seven, every morning. Thursday through Saturday, the room transforms at five for Butter Hour — anchovy butter toast, soft-scramble suppers, roast chicken for two, a list of twelve natural wines. North Berkeley earned an evening kitchen on this block.

Where it comes from.

Eggs from Riverdog Farm in Guinda. Dairy and cream from Straus in Marshall. Meat from Marin Sun Farms. Bread from Acme right here in Berkeley. Coffee roasted by Mr. Espresso in Oakland. We name our sources because we think you should know.

Who we are.

A small team of cooks and one nervous owner. We've cooked in Bay Area kitchens for a combined fifty-plus years. We live within walking distance. We're opening this restaurant because we wanted to eat in it.

See you on Shattuck, mid-September 2026.
